Why mount the scope so far forward?

Postby not_a_member » Thu Nov 25, 2010 3:21 pm

(look at the pics)

It isn't always on this particular gun, but why do people mount their scopes or holosights so far on the front of the gun?

Most people mount their Holo/Red Dot sight forward like that because its easier to sight in and get off a quick shot. Most of the time its all based on personal preference. Sometimes its based on the actual sight too. Depending on the style, people may mount it forward more than normal.
Look at the SOC 16 for instance. People normally put an Aimpoint replica on the little built in rail, its their personal preference and the style of red dot just seems to work well for that gun. But on the other hand, People may buy the scope mount for it and strap and ACOG on it. It's all based on the person, Gun, and style of sight. That's normally the way I see it.

Kinda based off Col. Cooper's idea of a scout rifle (If anybody on here actually gets that I said kinda) You run your optic foward so that you can aquire your target faster, and you can keep both eyes open. Works best with low power or no power sights. For working guns foward mounted optics are the norm now a days.

But looking at the pic... that sight still might be alittle to far foward.

The gun in the picture has a small RIS rail on the handguard. (I have one that is at least similar) If you want to mount an optic without buying the mount for an ak, you don't have much of an option on that particular version. As for why other people do it, it's all personal preference.

Should have known our resident commie would have more to say on running Soviet Junk... I've shot an AK but have not run with with Optics of anykind.

-shrugs- Well, considering 1) It's an AK, and 2) The Russian MVD's counter-terrorist unit Alfa does it, I guess it's not surprising I would know. They're using EOTechs, Surefires, even Glocks and Multicam these days. While I question their decision to use Glocks, I can't patronize them for using whatever gear they need to accomplish their mission.

And before all the idiot little children run out and buy a Glock, Multicam, and an AK with lights, lasers, and sights out the ass trying to be uber-1337 MVD Spetsnaz Alfa.. if you want to pull the look off properly, without looking like some Modern Warcrap 2 reject, drop me a message.

Actually we're both right. Both teams Alfa and Vympel were transferred over to MVD for a period of time, but IIRC they're both back under FSB control at the time of this writing.

Buzzkill. I was expecting a magnificent duel of intellect and fact checking. Aw well, happy endings work too.
