Why mount the scope so far forward?

I find it easier to shoot with both eyes open if the optics are a little farther forward, and it certainly is faster for me to have the optic farther forward. Its probably just preference

Mounting the scope further forward must really only work with EoTechs then. I don't have any problem having both eyes open with a reddot mounted closely---in fact, in order to use the reddot on my P90 I have to put my nose right on the charging handle track

I should have clarified in the first place--this is about bullets used by handguns and rifles. Last time I checked, 30mm was used by A-10s in close air support--and they usually don't hit people directly (and the mass is still much less than a human's).

The only way to physically knock someone down is with blunt force trauma with an object that has much more mass than the person (or to hit at a certain tipping point where the person will lose balance). When the projectile penetrates, there is no "energy transfer". Even an object lighter than the projectile, like an empty coke can versus a 7.62x54R, doesn't get knocked anywhere when shot. However a lighter BB which doesn't penetrate will knock the can over (personal experience). Three 30-06 rounds to the chest of a running Chinese soldier didn't stop him in his tracks either (Great Uncle's experience, Korean War).

i would assume we're not talking about scopes with magnification here, as you'd never be able to get easily into position with proper eye relief.

it works good for reflex sights, though it's not very accurate if you're not looking down the dead center of it. but it's good enough. performance is probably similar with traditional red dots. more expensive sights are going to cope much better with the distance between it and your eye. with the cheap ones, the dot/crosshair will get blurrier and harder to make out, as well as the aforementioned off-axis inaccuracy.
