Operation East Wind March 15, 2008 till March 23, 2008

What:
East Wind is a fully immersive, week-long, alternative history scenario airsoft event. Immersive means it runs 24 hours a day for the entire week. The event is set along the Cold War German frontier sometime in the late 1980s to early 90s between several NATO and East Block forces.

Though we encourage everyone who can to participate in the entire week, there are specific provisions for shorter-term and play-by-day participation. See below for details.

Where:
East Wind will be on a private field near Kirksville, Missouri. The field has never had an airsoft game on it and will be 100% new territory for everyone who attends. Nobody is going to have the home field advantage.

When:
East Wind will run from March 15, 2008 till March 23, 2008 with combat operations going live starting on Tuesday the 18th.

YOU DO NOT HAVE PLAY ALL SIX DAY!!

How can I participate?
Participation in East Wind is tiered to allow players of varying levels of skill and interest participate in the event. The two tiers of play are Soldier / Soldat and Volksgrenadier / Militzia. The Soldier / Soldat players are signing on for a span of time greater than a single day and are committing to play 24 hours a day during that time. For players who do not want that level of intensity, Volksgrenadier / Militzia offers per-day play much like you traditionally see at an airsoft event.

There are also a few slots open for special troops in the event. You may be able to participate as a Bundesgrenshultz West German Border Guard, an East German Grenztruppen Border Guard or as a combat engineer for either side. All special troop roles are only open to troops who are able to commit full term to the event as they will play a pivotal role in the event structure.

How much does East Wind cost?
The fee for anyone who is participating as a Soldier / Soldat or in a special troop role staying in the event 24 hours a day and supported by event logistics is $100 . That fee includes all food (period and nationality correct), pay in script that can be used to purchase snacks at the PX, and a tent to stay in. The fee remains the same regardless of if you stay for 2 nights or the entire term as what you are paying for is the logistics of setting the event up and supplying food. We will make some money on those who stay short term and lose some money on those who stay long term but it all should equal out. There are no free passes, everyone from the event planners to the field owner are paying the same $100 field fee.

Players who prefer to play at the Volksgrenadier / Militzia level are not supplied with food or overnight accommodations and pay $15 per person, per day of play . 100% of the Volksgrenadier/Militzia field fee goes to the field owner to pay for use of the property.

What do I need to play?
Full equipment requirements for the standard levels of play can be found at each of the links below. A PCI (pre-combat inspection) will be carried out before you are transported to the event from the parking area to insure that you have all of the required gear. This is an event for adults and we are not interested in babysitting someone who forgot to bring his rain gear. If it is on the list, you WILL need it so you better have it. You can obviously bring more than what is on the list but be sure to check the "what you cannot bring list" and keep in mind that you will not have access to your car (parked at a secure site off the property) during the event, so what you bring with you at the beginning is all you will have in your tent for the duration.

Some of these units employ specialist troops (engineers, sappers, border troops). Qualifications for these are listed in detail on the East Wind information forum on . If you feel you meet the requirements, contact the troop leader for more information.

What are the event rules for East Wind?
Complete event rules are too long to summarize, so can be found here:
•

Is there a size limit?
Size is limited to a max of 2 platoons per side for an overall event max of about 200 with a full roster including HQ and support troops. We expect closer to about 100 but will limit overall attendance to 200 to insure a quality experience for all players.

How do I sign up?
Sign up for players who will be committing to at least Tuesday through Sunday play is now open. Please follow the links below to sign up today. We will fill roster positions first with those players then will open signup to players who are able to commit shorter terms in January. See payment information on sign up link. Militzia and Volksgrenadier troops do not need to sign up, they may simply show up at the muster point at the appointed time each day and muster in.

Can I participate in a Non-Combat role?
Sort of. There will be a variety of roles in the event that are technically “non-combat” but as is typically the procedure at KCAA events nobody is administratively “non-combat.” In other words, you may still be shot, you may still be revived by a medic etc. In a real war nobody wanders around in an orange vest and at East Wind nobody will either. Would we like a press person? Yes! Would we like someone to help prepare meals? Yes! Do we want a CUCV driver? Sure! Are we going to promise nobody is going to shoot them? No… Feel free to PM either Aswayze or Tascabe on the KCAA forums if you are interested in a non-combat or support role.

Why do some roles have training requirements?
We have all been to airsoft events where our leaders were incompetent boobs; that is annoying for a day but that would be intolerable for a week. We are requiring training for leaders and those in key roles at East Wind to provide the best possible experience for the overall player base and to help keep everyone on the same page. Much of what happens at East Wind will be fairly new stuff to the players in attendance. Ever done a night recon over unfamiliar terrain? Ever cleared a lane in a minefield at night? Ever stood a two hour long watch at night with a PVS-7 strapped to your face? Ever been cut off from supply for more than a day at an airsoft game? Clearly this is some new ground we are treading here so we need to make sure that those in key roles know what they are doing. Does this mean that every player must have training to attend? No. Obviously, the better you are at what you do, the better you will be at it and the better you are at it the more fun you will likely have but that does not mean that you HAVE to be trained.
•

Why are you doing this?
That is easy. We -- KCAA, SLAP and Springfield Airsoft -- are doing this because no one else ever has (as far as we know) put on such an event, and of course “not because it is easy, but because it is hard.” We hope that you choose to attend to experience this unique event for the same reasons.
