Don't buy something from a Sports store. They most likely don't shoot the proper FPS and won't last long for the price. G&G makes great starter AEG's and they cost much less than at the store and they last years (still have mine from over 4 years ago). Get some goggles that are full seal (no gaps bigger than 6mm) and that are ANSI rated 87.1 2003. DO NOT GET MESH. If you are going to an open play, then you should be fine with a gun and goggles, but you will also need a battery, a charger, and some BB's.
Most guns come with a battery but these are usually just testing batteries and shouldn't be used in games. The charger is also a bad idea because they have no balancing system and can over charge your batteries, cause them to over heat, and maybe catch fire. Smart chargers are pretty cheap and keep your batteries working right. When getting BB's, most if not all players get white BB's that are 6mm high precision grade .2g or higher. Using anything smaller (.12g) or anything that isn't high precision grade can be hazardous to your gun (cause it to jam, break, etc).
Hopefully you take the right steps in starting airsoft and you have a great first experience.
Also, contact the event organizer. You may not even need to buy a gun, they may have some for rent or even have some for sale that you can use. This way you can find out if you like the sport before you drop your first $200-$300.
