Read Harry Turtledove's alternate history of the US Civil War for an idea of what might happen with US vs Canada. In WW 1, the CSA suffers its first defeat in over 50 years. The Confederacy, England and Canada all fight on the same side and are defeated, but the Canadians fight guerilla style against the US occupation, forcing the USA to tie down tons of troops up there.
As for the Communist takeover possibility, that would have been pretty much impossible. Stalin and Mao didn't see eye to eye on jackspit. Chances are, the Russians and the Chinese would have been at each other's throats long before they ever got here. The Russians have still not gotten over the Mongol invasions, nor have the Chinese forgotten the Kazakhs (say Cossacks).
If anyone recalls the 1980s movie Red Dawn, with Patrick Swayze, it was semi factual. Marixist influence had stretched down into South and Central America and there was great concern that the Russkis were getting a foothold in this hemisphere. During the movie, when one of Swayze's men converses with a US downed pilot, the pilot tells which countries got hit and how it was done. One of Swayze's men says, "Who's helping us?" The pilot responds with "Three billion screaming Chinese." Swayze's man replies, "I thought there were 4 billion Chinese." The pilot pours some whisky into the fire, causing it to flare up and says back: "There were." The implication was that the Russians used tactical nuclear weapons against the Chinese divisions stationed along the Russian border and strategic nukes against Chinese cities.
Another good piece of well written fiction is Eric Harry's Arc Light about the possibility of accidental nuclear war with the Russian Federation resulting from the US warning the Chinese about a Russian tactical nuclear strike against them. A coup ensues in Russia and they launch on the US. We in turn launch on them. A great read, trust me.
"Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical liberal minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end."
