What is the reason for the military stealing gold in the first place? To fund some operation? It strikes me as a llittle odd for the miltary to bother to collect gold.

That's where the part about including other scenarios fall. It could be small governments fighting over funds or terrorists trying to capture government shipments. I could line up at least a dozen scenarios where gold is going to be the reason for fighting. But mostly it acts as a point system, a different twist on capture the flag, so to speak. The "gold" just seems to be a simple, versatile prop to use. And if you think about, over the years, gold and the want/lack there of has probably instigated more fighting than almost anything else.

Like a collapsed government trying to get its gold out of dodge before the rebels enter the capital.....OK.
