Nerf Football Cannon Question

So, A friend and I have made a combustion potato gun, and instead of using potatos, we got a Nerf Vortex Pocket Football to shoot. We shot it a couple of times, and it goes pretty far. I haven't tried firing it at someone yet, but would there be rules for local airsoft fields about using one of these in combat?

And sorry if this is a redundant topic, I didn't look too deeply of this part of the forum.

If it has any sort of pyro involved, you will have to ask the field owner. Most places dont allow it for insurance reasons.

If its HPA powered or propane/green gas powered, then you should be good...

Well, its combustion, so it does involve fire. I use Igniter and starting fluid to fire it.

If its above 17 joules, its legally a gun. It would be a good idea to shoot it through a gun chrono and do math to figure out the energy.

Combustible potato guns are an excellent way to lose limbs or for the excessively stupid lives...take this statement from someone who has over 20yrs of medical experience.

The number of digits I have seen traumatically amputated over the years by variations of the potato cannon/homemade explosives is only slightly eclipsed by power tools.


With all that said I have a CO2 launcher that will throw a nerf football over 100 yards easily MUCH MUCH safer and not that difficult to build.

Your better of getting a air solenoid valve, pressure guage and a CO2 can to charge it with. I'v built plenty of air cannons to know that using fuel as a propelant is very dangerous and mostly illegal (precursor to a pipe-bomb). Plus you can make it look like any RL from a bazooka to a Javelin.

meh I know at command decisions you cannot directly shoot the football/rockets directly at people but those tools are great for tagging bunkers. and at GSF bunker tag is in play. but combustible proprellent? That's a bad idea.

Well, I've changed the the fuel to Static Guard, and it works better. The way load and shoot is I load the football first, spray the fuel, get a fan and make a mix of fuel and O2, then cap it, and hit the ignitor. It fires quite well, but after 30 shots or so on the same football, it wears the football down.
